Overall Job Objective

Position Description

This position is in the Metro Codes Department and is responsible for reviewing approved plans and inspecting new and existing mechanical/gas installations to ensure compliance with Metro Mechanical/Gas Codes and other regulatory requirements.  

The Metro Department of Codes and Building Safety, during the fiscal year 2015-2016 issued and tracked $3.7 billion in building permits, 50 percent more than the previous year.  The department concerns itself with the safety of the public as occupants in homes and buildings throughout the county, and also promotes beautiful neighborhoods through the enforcement of local codes and zoning regulations.  Codes is an exciting place to work during this period of growth and construction.
 

Typical Duties

-- Prepares, conducts, and follows up on inspections of mechanical/gas installations.
-- Reviews plans and specifications for compliance with regulatory codes.
-- Meets with contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners on matters relating to code regulations.
-- Inspects installations to ensure that procedures and materials meet approved standards.
-- Follows-up with re-inspections to verify compliance with regulations and approved plans.
-- Patrols and inspects for work being done without permits.
-- Issues work stop orders for failure to comply with codes.
-- Performs administrative duties.
-- Maintains accurate records and files.
-- Prepares daily field inspection reports.
-- Uses a computer to input and retrieve information.
-- Gives technical advice and assistance to engineers, mechanical contractors, and homeowners upon request.
-- Attends various meetings and training sessions.
-- May assist with training new inspectors.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma and five (5) years of mechanical inspection, mechanical installation, or related experience OR Associate's Degree in Construction Technology from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of mechanical inspection, mechanical installation, or related experience.  Valid  driver license.
 
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Must obtain Certified Mechanical Inspector (ICC) within 1 year of hire. (Failure to meet the certification requirements within the 1 year period shall result in disciplinary action.)
 
Note:  Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-- Knowledge in usage of codes, laws, and ordinances relating to mechanical installations and systems.
-- Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in installing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical /gas systems.
-- Knowledge of OSHA laws.
-- Knowledge of the International Mechanical Codes, International Fuel Gas Codes and other applicable codes.
-- Ability to enforce codes and regulations.
-- Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
-- Ability to detect deviations from regulatory codes.
-- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
-- Ability to discuss, explain, and interpret codes requirements.
-- Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.
-- Ability to maintain accurate records and write detailed reports.
-- Ability to perform detailed inspections.
-- Ability to use sound judgment in decision-making.
-- Ability to research and gather information.
